U Series 5 Flash Code Enhancement
The U Series 5 has been enhanced. This enhancement is enabled with a firmware code upgrade that is available through the use of a new download utility called SeaFlash. The SeaFlash utility will determine
if the U Series 5 drive will benefit from the enhancement and update of the
drive's flash code. The new code that incorporates the enhancements is
revision 3.39. This SeaFlash firmware upgrade utility is for use with Seagate U Series 5 Family of disc drives which include the following models:
ST340823A, ST330621A, ST320413A, ST315311A, ST310211A, ST38411A
Although the SeaFlash utility is designed to ensure that the data
existing on the drive will not be affected, Seagate recommends that
critical data currently existing on the U Series 5 be backed up.
Seagate Technology assumes no liability for lost data.
A summary of the enhancements follows:
During a power-off condition, if the drive actuator has just completed
a retract to the inner latch, some drives emit an audible beep at
approximately 1.5 kHz. This occurrence has no effect on drive reliability or
performance. This happens when power is removed by the host following an MS Windows 2000 or MS Windows ME shutdown command.
This new firmware corrects this condition. This condition does not
exist in all drives and is not exhibited in all systems.
Using the SeaFlash upgrade utility
-
Be sure to backup all critical data on the U Series 5 disc drive. Seagate assumes no liability for lost data.
-
Download the SeaFlash executable to your hard drive and run the program, or run it directly from the web, to create a bootable floppy. The diskette creator is
copyright Ontrack Data International. All rights reserved.
- Reboot to the special bootable floppy.
The program will automatically scan the attached devices and detect
and upgrade any affected U Series 5 Family disc drives which have not
already been updated.
WARNING: Do not remove power or reboot the system until instructed to do so.
You will be prompted to continue with the upgrade. "Y" to continue.
The download process typically takes about 120 seconds per drive to
complete. It can take up to 200 seconds depending on system and drive.
The program will prompt you to remove the diskette from drive "A:" and
cycle the system power when completed.
After the firmware has been upgraded, in typical situations the user's data will remain intact and the enhanced hard drive will be ready to resume operation.
Note: Windows 2000 will identify the drive as new hardware and prompt the user to reboot the first time
the computer is started after using the SeaFlash upgrade
utility.
Known Issues: The HighPoint HPT366 Ultra ATA/66 Controller is not supported at this time. If the program encounters this controller it will indicate such and skip over it. One work around solution is to temporarily attach the drive to the integrated ATA (IDE) controller on the motherboard. Use proper Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) precautions while moving the cable between the controller and the motherboard. Similarly, other third-party RAID controllers are not supported.
